Before February break, the first graders composed four beat rhythms (using quarter notes, eighth notes, and eighth rests) to pair with one of the characters from Peter and the Wolf. Then, a percussion instrument was selected to perform the rhythms. Half of the class played the instruments while the other half of the class acted out the story! It was so much fun.
